“So, Moses spoke thus to the children of Israel; but they did not heed Moses, because of anguish of spirit and cruel bondage” (Exodus 6:9).
The outfit was never intended to be worn by children. When Soviet cosmonauts returned from any extended time in space, they suffered from ill health. The lack of gravity caused their muscles to deteriorate. After returning to earth, they had difficulty standing up, stabilizing their gaze, and even walking. They often needed long-term rehabilitation to get back into shape.
That’s when Soviet scientists invented the “Penguin Suit.” This elastic outfit provided outside force against muscle and bone movement. Shoes, knee pads, shorts, and shoulder pads were all connected with elastic bands that created resistance for every move made. Eventually the technology for this therapy suit was shared with those who work in rehabilitation. Today, the special suit is used to treat children with physical disabilities resulting from cerebral palsy or other conditions caused by brain or spinal cord injury.
The Israelites needed something like a Penguin Suit. When Moses told Pharaoh to let God’s people go, the ruler made life miserable for his Hebrew slaves. He no longer provided them with straw for making bricks. They would have to find their own straw and still keep up their production. The brutal treatment tested the faith of Israel, who must have wondered if God could really deliver them.
Furthermore, Jacob’s children had become accustomed to life in Egypt. Many had married idol-worshipers and compromised their beliefs. Part of the multitude had no desire to leave Egypt. Their trust in the Lord was weak. Their faith muscles needed to be stretched and tested. In order to prepare for their departure, they must change from being Pharaoh’s servants to being God’s people.
God will sometimes use trials to refine our characters. When we trust more in our own strength than in the Lord’s power, we become weak. Because of His love for us, we are allowed to experience difficulties that prepare us for our own exodus from sin.
Lord Jesus, whatever trials I may face today, I will trust in Your power to strengthen and deliver me.
