Zechariah

Daily Devotional

Average reading time is about 3 minutes

“Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain!” (Zechariah 4:7).

Some mountains can be built from the ground up. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is looking at the possibility of constructing an artificial mountain. Mountains have the potential of causing rain because of the temperature changes in the winds traveling over them. For example, in places like the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies, thunderstorms form almost daily as a result of the scaling hot air.

Since the UAE currently receives fewer than five inches of precipitation per year, the construction of a rain-producing mountain seems like a good option, even if it were merely an artificial mountain.

The prophet Zechariah was facing a mountain of problems. Many of God’s people had turned away from the Lord (Zechariah 1:3) and “the people of the land tried to discourage the people of Judah” as they worked on building the temple in Jerusalem (Ezra 4:4).

God sent Zechariah into this discouraging situation. He came with a message of power in a time when the people felt weak. Yet his message had an unexpected twist. The power that God was offering was not in the form of human might (Zechariah 4:6). Instead, it was through the Spirit of God that difficulties would disappear.

From a human standpoint, Zerubbabel, the man in charge of leading out in the building of the temple, had a slow work ahead of him. Yet from the Lord’s perspective, he was facing only an artificial mountain. For God, that mountain could quickly “become a plain” (verse 7).

God desires to work through you in the same way He worked through Zechariah. He wants people to see that their difficulties do not look the same from God’s perspective. As did Zechariah, let us point others to the power of God’s Spirit.

Dear Jesus, please help me to show others that You can move mountains.
