A River of Life – Study Guide

Naaman was a renowned and wealthy commander in Syria who contracted leprosy, a feared and isolating disease. A Hebrew slave girl suggested he seek healing from the prophet Elisha in Israel. Desperate, Naaman traveled with his entourage and riches to meet Elisha, but instead of meeting him, Elisha sent a servant with simple instructions: to wash seven times in the Jordan River. Initially angered by the suggestion, Naaman almost turned away, but his servants convinced him to try. After immersing himself in the river six times with no change, on the seventh plunge, his leprosy vanished, and his skin was restored to perfect health. Naaman’s healing symbolizes the possibility of renewal and restoration, offering a powerful message of faith and transformation.
