Why do people believe in the afterlife?
PETER THOMPSON, a 32-year-old architect, was rushing to a meeting one rainy morning; his mind raced with thoughts of unfinished projects and unresolved conflicts with his family. Distracted by his worries, he failed to notice the slick road ahead. In a split second, his car skidded out of control, crashing into a barrier. As the world spun around him, Peter felt a strange sense of detachment wash over him.
Meanwhile, psychologist Jesse Bering was conducting a groundbreaking study on perceptions of consciousness after near-death experiences. Recounting stories like Peter’s to his research participants, he further asked questions like “Do you think Peter knows that he’s dead?” and “Do you believe he regrets not expressing his love to his family before he passed away?”
The results were startling. Most of the participants answered yes. Even among devoted sceptics, many acknowledged the possibility of Peter’s continued consciousness beyond his physical body.

For many, the belief in the afterlife provides a sense of continuity, a reassurance that our journey does not end with the closing of our eyes. It speaks to the profound truth that our lives have purpose and meaning beyond the fleeting moments of earthly existence. It compels us to live with intentionality, to strive for goodness and righteousness, knowing that our actions reverberate through the corridors of eternity.

Moreover, the concept of the afterlife serves as a moral compass, guiding our choices and shaping our character. It reminds us that every deed, every word spoken, carries weight in the grand scheme of existence. As we walk this pilgrim path, we are called to steward our lives wisely, mindful of the eternal consequences of our earthly actions.
