Mephibosheth

“Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son who was lame in his feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel; and his nurse took him up and fled. And it happened, as she made haste to flee, that he fell and became lame His name was Mephibosheth” (2 Samuel 4:4).

How would you like to be invited to eat at a king’s table every day for the rest of your life? When David had settled into his new role as king, he remembered his deep friendship with Saul’s son, Jonathan. He wanted to show his friend’s remaining family kindness for Jonathan’s sake.

After inquiring, he learned about Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth, a young man who had been crippled from a childhood accident. David soon sent for him.

When Mephibosheth was brought into the palace, he fell down on his face in front of the king. David told him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually” (2 Samuel 9:7).

Bowing before him, Mephibosheth responded, “What is your servant, that you should look upon such a dead dog as I?” (verse 8). At first, he was uncertain, as he had heard negative reports about the new king. But David’s kindness won him over.

Mephibosheth stayed in Jerusalem and had a permanent place at the king’s table. Whether or not he deserved it, because of Jonathan’s faithful friendship, Mephibosheth was treated as royalty for the rest of his life.

Did you know King Jesus has set a place for you at His table? “Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down
to eat and will come and serve them” (Luke 12:37). Undeserving though you might be, because of Jesus’ friendship, you will be treated as royalty for all eternity!

Dear Father, I praise You for welcoming me to Your table because of the friendship of Jesus.
