Habakkuk
“Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation” (Habakkuk 3:18).
Realistic optimism” sounds like a contradiction. After all, it is easy to write off optimistic people as being unrealistic. Likewise, it is easy to defend a negative attitude by pointing to real problems. But researchers who have interviewed people who made it through extremely difficult times have given a third option. They found that resilient people understand the importance of paying attention to the real world while at the same time not remaining focused on negative situations.
Sometimes this looks like focusing on the problems that can be solved rather than on the tragedy that has already occurred. Other times, it means ensuring that positive thoughts do not distract from problems that need attention.
The prophet Habakkuk was about to go through an extremely difficult trial. God informed him that the Chaldeans (Babylonians) were about to attack and take His people as captives. This bothered Habakkuk so much that he complained to the Lord. In his complaint, he reminded God that the Chaldeans should not be allowed to continue to destroy nations, especially since they attributed their successes to themselves.
God helped Habakkuk to remain optimistic after seeing the real problems. The Lord reminded him that the success of the Chaldeans, and all the wicked, would be only temporary. In other words, He planned to save the righteous in the end (3:13).
The result was that Habakkuk was able to rejoice in the midst of pain. By looking past the present circumstances, Habakkuk was able to convey one of the most beautiful examples of resiliency. In his prayer he explained the difficulties of life by comparing them to the threat of poverty and famine because of crop failures and the loss of cattle.
Whether trials come in the form of violence, hunger, or shame, Habakkuk was able to recognize that God’s future plans gave him the option of being optimistic. So, while he remained aware of the coming problems, he was able to say, “I will rejoice in the Lord.”
Lord, please give me the joy of Your ultimate salvation and wisdom for the moments of pain.
