Solomon, Part 3
“For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David” (1 Kings 11:4).
The American black vulture, while not the prettiest bird on the planet, is a great symbol of a good relationship. This fairly large bird of prey, which ranges from the south-eastern United States to Central Chile in South America, is known to mate for life. Bonded pairs spend time together year-round, sharing in incubation and nestling feeding duties.
The black vulture society encourages faithfulness, as black vultures have been known to attack other vultures that have been caught philandering. A study published in the journal Behavioural Ecology found that mated pairs show long-term pair bonding through evidence in DNA fingerprinting. Genetic tests of 16 vultures found no evidence of unfaithfulness.
Long before Solomon became king of Israel, God knew such rulers would face temptations that would lead them astray. The Lord specifically instructed future kings, “Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself” (Deuteronomy 17:17). The wisest of all men knew God’s law and carefully followed the Lord in the early years of his rule.
But in attempting to stretch the borders of the kingdom, Solomon made alliances with foreign nations. He first took Pharaoh’s daughter for a wife. Believing such connections were helpful to building Israel, he began to take other wives, thinking he would lead them to the worship of the true God. But gradually he was led away from the Lord. His desire to excel made him forget the source of his wisdom. Luxury and outward beauty became more important than a pure and righteous character.
Solomon, who stood at one of the highest points in Israel’s history, fellow. One wrong choice of unfaithfulness led to another. That is how the devil leads people away from God—one small step at a time.
“Father, lead me day by day, ever in Thine own sweet way; teach me to be pure and true; show me what I ought to do.”
