Asa
“Asa cried out to the Lord his God, and said, ‘Lord, it is nothing for You to help, whether with many or with those who have no power’ ” (2 Chronicles 14:11).
Hydropower is electricity created by using the energy of moving water. When rain and melting snow runs down out of the hills and mountains, the powerful streams and rivers can be captured by
moving turbines and made into hydroelectric power. The first hydroelectric power plant in the United States was built at Niagara Falls in 1881. The world’s first Edison hydroelectric power station began operating in Apple- ton, Wisconsin in 1882.
The largest hydroelectric plant in the United States is the Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River in Washington State. It dwarfs the pyramids of Egypt in size and is one of the largest concrete structures in the world, containing almost 12 million cubic yards of it. That’s enough material to build two standard six-foot wide sidewalks around the world at the equator.
When Asa, the third king of Judah and the grandson of Rehoboam, was about to be attacked by Zerah the Ethiopian, he was far outnumbered. Though Asa had been preparing his country for possible war, Egypt’s Nubian forces were far more powerful than the smaller army of Judah. Zerah led over one million soldiers.
While preparing for war in every human way possible, Asa turned to God for divine power. He prayed, “Lord, it is nothing for You to help, whether with many or with those who have no power; help us, O Lord our God, for we rest on You and in Your name, we go against this multitude. O Lord, You are our God; do not let man prevail against You!” (2 Chronicles 14:11).
The contrast between human power and God’s power is greater than the difference between a tiny watch battery and the huge megawatts of electricity flowing from the largest hydroelectric dam. As did Asa, who by God’s strength defeated the Egyptian army, we too may tap into divine power to overcome all of our enemies.
Dear Father, I cry to You today for power to gain victory over the devil and his hosts.
