“So, David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, ‘Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?’ Then David sent messengers and took her” (2 Samuel 11:3, 4).
Bathsheba must have been surprised when she answered her door and found the king’s servants standing there. A million thoughts swirled through her mind. Her husband was away in battle; perhaps he had been wounded—or worse. So, she was probably worried as she went along to the royal residence. Sadly, Bathsheba’s worries were just beginning.
After being seduced by the king, Bathsheba went home. Since she had been a faithful wife to Uriah, she must have been filled with shame—and confusion. Why would the king, who she had greatly respected, do such a thing? How could he just use her like this?
To complicate matters, she became pregnant with his child. She must have struggled with what to do. Frightened and distraught, she finally sent a letter to David informing him of the situation. If only she could have known the chain of circumstances that would result.
Before long, Bathsheba was a grieving widow. After her days of mourning, she was taken to the palace and became David’s wife. But more tragedy followed, when their baby boy died only a few days after he was born. Again, she found herself deep in grief.
Bathsheba suffered greatly because of one man’s uncontrolled passion. She was a victim, and although she felt ashamed, she wasn’t to blame.
God had compassion on her. In time, Bathsheba had another son, Solomon, who would inherit David’s throne. Bathsheba became an ancestor to the Saviour of the world.
If you’ve ever been a victim, be assured that God has compassion for you and has great plans for your life. More than anything, He wants you as part of His family. He said, “Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you” (Isaiah 49:15).
Dear God, thank You for holding me in Your heart of love at all times and in every circumstance.
