While many significant events in the Bible took place on specific days of the week, there is no explicit command from God to observe them as holy or set apart for holy use. For example, Jesus sacrificed Himself for our sins on a Friday, a momentous occasion that secured our salvation. However, there is no indication in the Bible that this day should be observed in any special way.
On the other hand, there is a memorial of the resurrection mentioned in Scripture, and it is not cantered around observing Sunday as a holy day. The apostle Paul teaches that through baptism, “We are buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also walk in newness of life.” (Romans 6:4). Baptism serves as a memorial of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.
Some people claim that Jesus’ disciples gathered in the upper room on the Sunday of His resurrection to celebrate it. However, the biblical accounts present a different picture. The disciples initially did not believe the reports of Jesus’ resurrection and were filled with doubt (Luke 24:11) and Mark records, “After that, He appeared to two of them as they walked and went into the country. And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either. Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.” 16:12-14). They were in the upper room, not for a joyous celebration, but out of fear and uncertainty. “The doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews.” John 20:19).
While it is true that Jesus was raised on the first day of the week, Sunday, and this holds immense significance for our salvation, there is no scriptural evidence of Sunday observance as a holy day. The command to keep the seventh-day Sabbath, however, remains clear in the Bible, given directly by God (Exodus 20:8-11; Deuteronomy 5:12-15). The Sabbath is grounded in God’s explicit instruction and serves as a special day of rest and worship.
