Sixth Commandment

“You shall not murder. Ex 20:13

The sixth commandment prohibits any unjust actions that harm or abuse the lives of others. This includes acts of injustice that lead to the premature ending of life. Moreover, it condemns the spirit of hatred, revenge, and any indulgence of passions that result in harmful behaviour or even wishing harm upon others. As the Bible states, “whoever hates his brother is a murderer.”

Additionally, the commandment extends to encompass a disregard for the needs and suffering of others, promoting a selfish neglect of caring for the vulnerable and deprived. It also encompasses acts of self-indulgence, unnecessary deprivation, or excessive labour that harm our own health. All of these actions, to a greater or lesser extent, violate the principles of the sixth commandment.
