What is the Sabbath?

Imagine having a day every week to escape the demands of work, responsibilities, and never-ending to-do lists. A day to cherish time with loved ones, connect with nature, or extend kindness to others. It may sound like a luxury, but did you know that God designed a weekly day of rest for us? It’s a concept rooted in the very beginning of creation.

God Started It

“In six days, God created the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but on the seventh day He rested. Therefore, God blessed the seventh day and made it holy” (Genesis 2:2-3). God rested and set apart the seventh day as a special and sacred day. He even included it as one of the Ten Commandments: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God” (Exodus 20:8-10).

The Reason for the Sabbath

The Sabbath serves two significant purposes: to commemorate God’s creation and to serve as a sign of our salvation. It reminds us that “…In six days, the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” Exodus 20:11). It represents the completion of God’s work and His desire for us to experience rest and rejuvenation. Additionally, God gave us the Sabbath as a “sign between us, so they would know that I the Lord made them holy.” Ezekiel 20:12).

The Hebrew word for Sabbath means “to cease.” Just as God rested after His creative work, the Sabbath invites us to pause from our daily routines and focus on what truly matters. It’s an opportunity to hit the reset button, demonstrating our trust in God’s provision and power. By intentionally setting aside one day each week for rest and worship, we declare, “God, I trust You to take care of my needs even if I take a break from striving for success. Today, I will rest my mind, body, and soul in Your presence.”

Take the Opportunity

In our fast-paced and busy lives, it’s crucial to create space for spiritual growth and reflection. The Sabbath offers us that chance to step away from the pressures and demands of our everyday lives and reconnect with God and ourselves. It’s an invitation to develop a deeper relationship with Him and prioritize what truly matters in life.

Embracing the Sabbath can be a transformative practice that enhances our faith journey. It provides a rhythm of rest, worship, and renewal that nourishes our souls and helps us find balance amidst the busyness of life.

So, why not seize the opportunity to experience the beauty and blessing of the Sabbath? Embrace the gift of rest and let it rejuvenate your spirit, deepen your faith, and bring you closer to God.
