“At Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which is translated Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did” (Acts 9:36).

Shifra Mincer was only twelve years old when she began volunteering at a homeless shelter that she first visited with her teacher and classmates. Because she already knew how to sew, she was asked to make repairs on clothing items and shoes, which she did on regular visits throughout her high school years. At the same time, she started a sewing club at school and Shifra and her friends made heart pillows for the elderly and for sick children. Now an adult, Shifra thrives on making a difference and using the talents she was given to help others.

Dorcas, one of the most beloved women in the early Christian church, had the same kind of giving spirit and genuine concern for others. Her deep compassion was seen in her continual acts of kindness. So, when she became sick and died, the church at Joppa was devastated. Desperate and grief-stricken, they immediately sent for the apostle Peter who was in a nearby town.

Sensing the urgency of their request, Peter came right away. The friends of Dorcas wept as they showed the apostle the clothing she had made for the needy.

Peter sent the mourners out of the room where Dorcas lay. Then he knelt down in prayer. Addressing the corpse, he commanded, “Tabitha, arise.” The Bible says at that point “she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up” (Acts 9:40). After helping her up, Peter took great pleasure in presenting her to her friends. The power of God had restored this dearly loved disciple to life.

Undoubtedly, Dorcas continued with her generous and thoughtful deeds, for she understood that we are here to serve others. She knew that believers are “created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). Are you committed to walk in the good works God has prepared for you today?

Dear Father, fill me with the love of Jesus so I can be a blessing to others and walk in good works.
