“She brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7).
How would you like to host a family reunion with 4,514 relatives? This largest-ever recorded family reunion was held in 2012 at Saint- Paul-Mont-Pénit, Vendée, France. The family tree of the Porteau-Boileve family had been traced back to the seventeenth century by Jean- Michel Cheneau, one of the descendants.
Family reunions have been held in America for over a hundred years, with most reunions slated for the months of July and August. The continuing popularity of these gatherings illustrates the great importance most people place on family. And no wonder; our ancestors and families have much to do with shaping and enriching our lives.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, put her full effort into shaping and enriching the character of her holy Son. Led by the Spirit of God, she taught Him about heavenly things, and these truths came straight from the Scriptures. Though she was poor in material goods, she was rich in spiritual treasures, and what a difference she made for the world with her willing and devoted heart.
Mary was overwhelmed with the privilege of parenting the Saviour of the world. Even before He was born, she felt unworthy to receive this high honour and praised God for it, saying, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour. For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; for behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:46–48).
This woman was indeed greatly blessed, and she treasured her familial link with her Son and Redeemer. Amazingly, we can all have this same bond with Jesus; we can become His own family members. Jesus explained it, “For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother” (Matthew 12:50).
Dear Lord, thank You for allowing me to become Your close kin, a cherished member of Your family!
